I practice in the spirit of the Zen Buddhist concept of the "beginner's mind." I like how one Zen teacher summed it up: "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few" (Shunryu Suzuki).
When I think of my approach in the language of algebra, I come up with an equation like this: "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there" (Rumi) + "You can observe a lot just by watching" (Yogi Berra) + "Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding (Kahlil Gibran) + "What is split off, not felt, remains the same. When it is felt, it changes. Most people don't know this" (Eugene Gendlin) = "The most powerful agent of growth and transformation is something much more basic than any technique: a change of heart" (John Welwood).
"Psychotherapy is about how you think...how you live with your emotions...the perspectives you bring to relating with the people who matter to you...what you aspire to in your life and how you may unwittingly make it harder for yourself to reach those goals" (James Bugental).
I will work hard to help you uncover and clear away the obstacles in your life that are keeping you from realizing your hopes and dreams...the obstacles that are keeping you from having close connections with the people important to you.
Let's begin as beginners open to a world of possibilities.
